Skill: Speed
Drill: Beat ‘Em
Equipment needed: Two cones per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description:
Teaching SKILLZ:
CHOICES – The instructor can ask the students to pick a partner in ten seconds. This gives them the chance to work with the people they want to work with, which can motivate them to win and compete against their friend. The choice in the activity will also empower the students, as they will feel more in control over what they are doing.
Brain SKILLZ:
SPEED OF PROCESSING – The student must see which direction their partner is running, and run faster than them in order to pick up the cone first. This works on the ability to complete a task quickly and accurately, as they have to run as fast as they can to get to the cone first.
Step 1
Pair up the students with a partner and spit the pairs into groups.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
For each group, lay two cones on the mat approximately 20 feet apart.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • When I say “go” the student in front will race to either the cone on the left or right.
  • You cannot switch directions once you head towards a cone.
  • The person in back will try and race their partner to the cone.
  • This will build your explosive speed.
  • The first one to the cone is the winner.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Run with an extra burst of speed to catch and pass your partner
Step 5
  • Continue for three races, and then switch roles.
