Skill: Speed
Drill: Bag Tag
Equipment needed: 1 wave bag or similar target per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: In this drill the students are going to play a game of wave bag tag to challenge their reaction time.
Teaching SKILLZ:
NTRINSIC MOTIVATION – The instructor can ask the students if they want a blackbelt challenge, and if they want to be like a blackbelt, then instead of doing one move at a time, the instructor will call out combinations. This will motivate the students to get stronger, since they have a common goal of getting a blackbelt one day and picking a challenge will help them get there.
Brain SKILLZ:
SPEED OF PROCESSING – The student must be able to hear the instructor call out a number, connect the number to the appropriate technique they are supposed to do, and hit the pad correctly before the other students in order to get a point. This works on their ability to complete a task quickly and accurately.
Step 1
Divide your students into several equal lines.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Set up one wave bag per line. The first student in each line will stand within striking distance of the bag.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • 1 – Hit the bag with a left punch
  • 2 – Hit the bag with a right punch
  • 3 – Kick the bag with a left round kick
  • 4 – Kick the bag with a right round kick
  • Repeat the drill until every student has a turn.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Get stronger combinations
  • Get faster with combinations
  • Train to perform like a black belt
Step 5
  • You can make it challenging by calling out combinations, but you will have to watch carefully to identify which student is not only the fastest, but does the correct combination.
