Skill: Speed
Drill: Cone Pick Up
Equipment needed: Two small cones
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: In this drill the students will challenge each other in a race to pick up their cone and return it to their team. This is a fun drill that will help them build explosive speed and agility.
Teaching SKILLZ:
CHOICES – The instructor can ask the students to pick a partner in ten seconds. This gives them the chance to work with the people they want to work with, which can motivate them to win and compete against their friend. The choice in the activity will also empower the students, as they will feel more in control over what they are doing.
Brain SKILLZ:
AUDITORY PROCESSING – The student must hear the instructor call their number that they are assigned, run down and grab the cone, and run back to their side quicker than their partner. This works on their ability to follow verbal commands.
Step 1
Divide your class into pairs and give each pair a number starting with number 1. Next, have them line up facing each other (in order) directly across from each other on the training deck.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Set up two cones in the middle of the training deck.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The instructor will call out a number, and the two students assigned to that number will race to the middle of the training deck and grab their cone and then race back to their spot.
  • The first student sit back in their spot with their cone gets a point for their team.
  • The first team to reach 10 points is the winner.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Build speed and agility by racing to pick up cones.
Step 5
  • Continue the drill calling out random numbers.
