Drill: Pad Tags
Equipment needed: 4 small targets per box
Instructors needed: One per box
Description: In this drill the students are going to challenge their explosive speed by tapping the pads in various orders as quickly as possible.
Teaching SKILLZ:
HEALTHY COMPETITION – The instructor can give the lines silly team names in order to motivate the students, like “hamburgers vs. hot dogs”. This will motivate the students to play the game with effort in order to score and win for their team. The instructor can also say something like “Who can be faster than ___?” or “Who can be as fast as a blackbelt?” This can also help motivate the students to try their best during the game.
Brain SKILLZ:
SPEED OF PROCESSING – The students must be able to listen for what the instructor says, and quickly run towards the side/object that the instructor is referring to. This works on their ability to make the correct choices quickly, as well as complete a task quickly and accurately; if they make the wrong choice, they will not get the point.
Step 1
Divide your students into several groups.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
For each group, set up a box with a pad that is set on the middle. Have one student from each group stand in the middle of the box.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • On your command, the student will challenge their explosive speed with the following directions:
  • Forward- touch the pad directly in front of them
  • Backward- touch the pad directly behind them
  • Left- touch the pad to their left
  • Right- touch the pad to their right
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Making quick, correct choices while developing speed
Step 5
  • Continue until each student has a turn.
