Skill: SPEED
Drill: Listen Closely
Equipment needed: A pair of handmitts for each line
Instructors needed: One for each line
Description: This drill will be working on the skill SPEED by having students work of their reactive speed through hearing and number and reacting quickly. This drill will challenge student intellectual stage of development by being able to remember what each number means and throwing the correct punches fast.
Teaching SKILLZ: Extrinsic Motivation
Students are motivated by the push-up consequence for mistakes and the fun reward of seeing their instructor do pushups when they succeed, which drives them to put in extra effort.
Brain SKILLZ: Auditory Processing
Students must process and respond to verbal cues quickly and accurately, improving their ability to listen, recall, and react under pressure.
Step 1
Divide your students into even lines
Step 2 – Setup the Drill
Have one instructor holding the handmits at the front of each line.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules
  • Students will come up and stand in front of their instructor.
  • For the first round the instructor will call out two numbers: 1, 2, 3, or 4. 1 being a jab, 2 being a cross, 3 being a hook, and 4 being an uppercut.
  • Which ever two numbers the instructors call out the student will have to quickly respond with the correct punches.
  • Each time a student comes up they will get 3 combinations
  • Each round you can add to the number in the combination.
  • On the last round, if a student messes up on a combination they will get three pushups, but if they are able to do all three combinations without messing up the instructor has to do 5 pushups.
Step 4 – Takeaways
  • Hands up. When you aren’t using your hands make sure they are always by your face to protect it.
  • Listen closely. You want to make sure you are listening to the numbers your instructors are saying.
  • Be fast. Challenge yourself to go the fastest you can.
Step 5
  • Continue for 2-3 rounds.
