Skill: Speed
Drill: Ready, Fire!
Equipment needed: One wave bag cushion and foam block per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: In this drill the students will build their reactive speed. The instructor will say “ready… fire!” and the first student to punch the block off is the winner.
Teaching SKILLZ:
TRICKERY – The instructor can say things like “tire”, or just say “go” to try and trick the students. This will enhance their auditory processing skills as they have to listen for the whole word, and not just the sounds in the word.
Brain SKILLZ:
AUDITORY PROCESSING – The student must listen for the word “fire” in order to be able to stand up and kick. This works on their ability to respond to verbal commands.
Step 1
Divide your class into even lines.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
For each line you will need a wave bag cushion and foam block or similar objects as shown in the picture.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • When I say “ready… fire!” the first student to jump onto their feet and punch the block off is the winner.
  • If you jump up before I say “fire” then you must do 10 push-ups and then go to the end of the line.
  • The goal is to have good reactive speed and not be tricked by the instructor.
  • On the second round, you will round kick the target.
  • One the third round you can pick a punch or round kick.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Apply your reactive speed
  • Pay attention to what is being said
Step 5
  • Continue until each person in line has at least three turns.
