Skill: SPEED
Drill: Kick Explosion
Equipment needed: One kicking target per line
Instructors needed: One per line
Description: The students will practice having technical speed by kicking a target, head level, while staying in the ring. Technical speed is doing something quickly while not being sloppy. Staying in the ring forces them to have balance and control, and kicking head level increases their flexibility.
Teaching SKILLZ: Healthy Competition
Students are motivated to push themselves by competing for points for their team, while still focusing on good technique and accuracy.
Brain SKILLZ: Response Inhibition
Students must control their movements to stay inside the ring and avoid rushing, making sure each kick is accurate and counts toward their total.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines.
Step 2
For each line you will need an instructor holding a kicking pad and a ring for the student to stand in.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules
  • When I say “go” you will kick the target, held at head level, while staying in the ring.
  • Once you kick the target 20 times, have a seat.
  • The first person to have a seat wins a point for their team.
  • If your foot doesn’t hit the target, then the instructor will not count that kick.
  • If your foot lands out of the ring, then the instructor will not count that kick.
  • The team with the most points at the end of this drill is the winner.
Step 4 – Takeaways
  • Make sure you hit the pad each time.
  • Kick fast and strong the whole time.
  • Breathe so that you can finish all your kicks.
Step 5
  • Continue until each student has at least three turns.
Step 6
  • On each round, increase the number of kicks by 10 reps.
