  • Today we are going to work on FITNESS and COORDINATION.
  • FITNESS means to make your body stronger.
  • COORDINATION means your body functions in harmony.
  • We are going to run one FITNESS drill and one COORDINATION drill, and then review the testing requirements for both SKILLZ.
Skill-Building Drills – 10 Minutes

Army Crawl Relay:

The students will build their fitness skills by army crawling down the mat while holding a small square pad on the back of their legs. Holding the pad with their legs prevents them from using their legs to crawl, and forces them to use only their arms.
  • Teaching SKILLZ: TRICKERY – Instead of saying “go”, the instructor can say words that sound similar, like “gopher” and “ghost” in order to keep the students engaged and improve their auditory processing.
  • Brain SKILLZ: DIVIDED ATTENTION – The student must be able to crawl down the mat as fast as they can, while also keeping their feet together the whole time, or else the pad will fall down. This works on their ability to do multiple things at one time, as they have to crawl as quick as they can to try and win the race, but also keep their feet together or the pad will fall.

Blindfold Challenge:

The students will build their coordination skills by performing left and right combinations while blindfolded. This will help the students focus even more without using visual skills to remember their left and right.
  • Teaching SKILLZ: UP THE REP – The students can have a really sloppy punch on their first one, and slowly increase in quality until on their fifth punch, they have their best technique. The instructor can match their voice to the quality of their moves, so the instructor can say “one” sloppy and tired, and say “five” strong, in order to remind the students to increase their quality.
  • Brain SKILLZ: AUDITORY PROCESSING –  The student must hear the instructor call out “left” or “right”, and use that hand to punch. This works on their ability to follow audio cues correctly.
