Skill: Control
Drill: Knock Down
Equipment needed: Two slammer pads per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: In this drill the students will practice controlling their power by trying to knock their class mate down with a side kick.
Teaching SKILLZ:
NEUROBICS – While the student does their kicks, the instructor can ask them to count by colors, animals, or another age-appropriate category. This will connect the left and right hemispheres of their brain, and keep the students engaged in the activity. This will also further test their long-term memory, as they must be able to recall things that belong to the category that was given.
Brain SKILLZ:
VISUAL PROCESSING – The student must be able to kick the pad held by another student, in an attempt to knock them over. This works on their ability to make sense of what they see, as the students must be able to hit the middle of the pad as strong as they can so they can knock the other student over.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
The first two students in line will stand on one slammer pad and hold another slammer pad.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The second student in line will side kick the slammer pad held by their class mate.
  • Each student will have 3 attempts to knock their class mate off the slammer pad.
  • After the third attempt, the student holding the target will go to the end of the line and the second student in line will take the place of the holder standing on the slammer target.
  • You can add variety by changing the kick to a round kick and front kick, or any other kick that compliments your style and/ or the student’s belt level.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Control the power of your kicks.
  • Try to knock your partner off the slammer pad with the power of your kicks
Step 5
  • Repeat the process until every student has a turn to both hold the target and kick the target.
