Drill: Hit the Mitt Relay
Equipment needed: 2 punching mitts per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: The students will practice controlling their power by hitting the pads either hard or soft. By doing so, they will learn how to turn their power on and off.
Teaching SKILLZ:
TRICKERY – The instructor can try to trick the students by saying “hard” with low intensity, and saying “soft” with high intensity. This will help the students analyze what is being said, instead of just hearing the sounds of what is being said.
Brain SKILLZ:
AUDITORY PROCESSING – The students must be able to hear the instructor say “hard” or “soft”, and punch/kick with the correct intensity. This works on their ability to follow verbal directions quickly.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Instructor will stand at the front of the line ready to give commands
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The first person in line will strike the pad 5 times.
  • The instructor will alternate saying “hard” or “soft”.
  • The student must strike or kick the pad accordingly
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Listen for hard or soft.
  • Control your power but still hit fast.
  • Keep your hands in chamber.
Step 5
  • Continue until each student has 3 turns.
