Skill: Control
Drill: Super Statue
Equipment needed: One slammer pad per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: The students will practice having control of their body by racing and jumping over a pad and then freeze into a guarding stance.
Teaching SKILLZ:
TRICKERY – Instead of saying “go”, the instructor can say words that sound similar, like “gopher” and “ghost” in order to keep the students engaged and improve their auditory processing.
Brain SKILLZ:
AUDITORY PROCESSING – The student must hear the instructor say “go”, and then run and jump over the pad, and freeze. This works on their ability to process audio cues and respond accordingly.
Step 1
Divide your students into even lines with no more than six students per line and have them line up on one end of the mat.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
One the other end of the mat, place a slammer target on the ground directly across from each line.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • When I say “go” you will race down the mat, jump over the slammer pads, and then freeze into a guarding stance.
  • The first person to control their body and freeze into a guarding stance wins a point for their team.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Learn to stop your body immediately when you need to freeze.
Step 5
  • Continue until each student has at least three turns.
