Drill: Number Punches
Equipment needed: 2 punching mitts per line
Instructors needed: 1 per line
Description: In this drill students will work on DEXTERITY with their punches assigning each punch a number and having to perform them when the number is called.
Teaching SKILLZ:
CHOICES – The instructor can ask the student how many numbers they want at a time, from one to five. This will allow the students to choose their own difficulty that they are comfortable with. The choice in the activity will also empower the students, as they will feel more in control over what they are doing.
Brain SKILLZ:
WORKING MEMORY – The students must be able to listen for which numbers the instructor calls out, and perform the corresponding techniques in the correct order. This works on their ability to hold onto information while performing a task.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Have 1 instructor per line hold pads. Assign each punch to a number: 1) Jab 2) Cross 3)Hook 4) Uppercut
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • Have the first student in line go to a fighting stance.
  • The instructor will call out numbers out of order.
  • You must perform the appropriate punch for each number.
  • On the next round call multiple numbers.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Do your best to remember the numbers.
  • Punch quickly to show the best DEXTERITY.
  • Do your best to not get tricked.
Step 5
  • Continue until everyone has 2-3 turns.
