Skill: Dexterity
Drill: Blindfold Basics
Equipment needed: One blindfold per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: Technique comes from the inside more so than the outside. Although it is important that we are looking at our moves so that we can correct position, we must also understand how to feel each move from the inside. In this drill you are going to perform your basic strike while blindfolded to help you improve your technique.
Teaching SKILLZ:
NEUROBICS – The instructor can have the student count their own techniques, but the instructor can give them a category, like colors, states, superheroes, etc. This will help connect the left and right hemispheres of the brain, as well as keep the students engaged in the activity.
Brain SKILLZ:
Step 1
Divide your students into lines
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
The first student in line will put the blindfold on.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The instructor will call out a basic strike based on the student’s belt level.
  • The student will execute the strike with the best technique possible.
  • The instructor will help correct the technique by adjusting the position of the strike and also by giving the student some details of what to correct on the execution.
  • Repeat the drill until each student in line has practiced every strike for his or her belt level.
  • In the final rotation have each student practice all of his (or her) strikes without the blindfold to see if there is a difference.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Visualize the technique while blindfolded
  • Execute moves without the use of eyes
Step 5
  • Continue until the student does at least five repetitions of the strike.
