Drill: Accurate Side Kicks
Equipment needed: One ring per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: In this drill the students will practice their physical dexterity in their kicks by executing sidekicks down the mat through a ring. This will help them build better accuracy. This drill will also help them build better technique in their kicks.
Teaching SKILLZ:
EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION – If the student hits the ring with their foot, or their kick misses the ring, then the student has to start over.
Brain SKILLZ:
VISUAL PROCESSING – The students must be able to sidekick through the ring with proper technique. This works on their ability to make sense of what they see and participate in visual activities, as they must be able to see the ring and adjust their kick to avoid hitting the ring.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Provide a ring for each line.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • You will build dexterity in your kicks by executing a sidekick through a ring while stepping down the mat.
  • You must do five sidekicks through the ring while stepping down the mat.
  • If you touch the ring at any time, then you must start over.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Work on accuracy of side kicks by not touching the rings.
  • Kick as you move.
Step 5
  • Continue until each student has at least two turns with both legs.
