Skill: DEXTERITY
Drill: Point & Flex
Equipment needed: None
Instructors needed: Several to monitor
Description: The students will test their DEXTERITY with their feet in this drill by pointing and flexing their foot while doing front kicks.
Teaching SKILLZ: Trickery
challenge students’ listening skills by occasionally calling the wrong word or using a silly sound to test if they’re truly paying attention before kicking.
Brain SKILLZ: Response Inhibition
students must resist the impulse to kick automatically and instead pause just enough to make sure their foot position matches the instructor’s actual command.
Step 1
Divide the class into lines.
Step 2 – Setup the Drill
Place instructors where they can get a good view of the kicks since they happen fast.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The instructor will call either “point” or “flex”.
  • The first student that performs the proper type of foot position in their kick wins.
  • If there are multiple students who do very well, have them compete against one another.
Step 4 – Takeaways
  • When pointing your foot, make sure your ankle is straight.
  • When flexing, push through the ball of your foot.
  • Have good snap on each kick.
Step 5
  • Continue for at least 2 rounds.
