Drill: Block Pops
Equipment needed: 1 wavemaster top, 1 block per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: Students will work on their DEXTERITY with their sidekicks and chambers on this drill by using the chamber to pop the block off a pad and then sidekick in 1 smooth motion.
Teaching SKILLZ:
EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION – If the student kicks before they knock over the block, or their chamber does not knock the block over, then they must do three pushups before they continue.
Brain SKILLZ:
VISUAL PROCESSING – The students must be able to see the block on the pad and pull their leg back far enough so their chamber knocks the block over. This works on their ability to make sense of what they see, as they must be able to pull their leg all the way to the block before they are able to do their kick.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
1 top with the block on top set in front of the students belt
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • Have the first student in each line start in guarding stance.
  • They will then chamber for a sidekick to pop the block off the wavemaster to with their chamber knee.
  • Then they will perform a proper sidekick.
  • Replace the block and repeat 2 more times.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Pivot when you chamber
  • Keep your chamber tight each time
  • Make sure you sidekick is as strong as possible.
Step 5
  • Continue 2-3 times through the line.
