Skill: Dexterity
Drill: Kick 4 Kick
Equipment needed: 1 chest protecotr or body shield per line
Instructors needed: 1 per line
Description: Students will practice DEXTERITY by demonstrating their ability to use a turn sidekick after blocking a round kick. This will challenge them physically to be able to block and counter correctly.
Teaching SKILLZ:
EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION – If the student does not block the kick, or miss their sidekick, they will have five pushups.
Brain SKILLZ:
VISUAL PROCESSING – The student must be able to see their instructor throw the round kick, and react by blocking and countering. This works on their ability to respond quickly and accurately to visual cues, as they have to respond quick so they do not get hit by the round kick.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Have the students face the instructors in a guarding stance.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The instructor will throw a round kick toward the students chest.
  • Once the student blocks the kick they can turn and sidekick with their rear leg.
  • They should be hitting the instructors chest protector with the heel of their foot.
  • The students will do this 3 times then head to the end of the line.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Watch the kick before you turn.
  • Chamber correct for a sidekick.
  • Spot the target you kick as well.
Step 5
  • Continue until each student has 2 turns.
