Skill: Dexterity
Drill: Partner Basics
Equipment needed: None
Instructors needed: 1 per line
Description: Students will practice having good dexterity by being able to be faster than their partner when the instructor calls out one of their basics.
Teaching SKILLZ:
CHOICES – The instructor can ask the students to pick a partner in ten seconds. This gives them the chance to work with the people they want to work with, which can motivate them to beat their friend even more. The choice in the activity will also empower the students, as they will feel more in control over what they are doing.
Brain SKILLZ:
RESPONSE INHIBITION – The students must be able to do their techniques as quickly as they can without getting confused since their partner is next to them. This works on their ability to complete a task despite distraction, the distraction being their partner doing their techniques at the same time.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Have the instructor monitor two lines.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The first two students will come up and stand next to each other.
  • The instructor will call out one of their basics. The students will then show off that basic as fast as they can trying to beat their partner.
  • The student that is the fastest will get a point, and the first student to 3 points wins.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Be fast so that you can score a point.
  • Make your technique look good to score a point.
  • Think about each technique you’re doing!
Step 5
  • Continue for 2-3 turns.
