Drill: Shutdown
Equipment needed: None
Instructors needed: A few to monitor
Description: The students will practice their FLUIDITY by responding to being thrown by shutting down their opponent with good grips from the closed guard.
Step 1
  • Divide your class into partners, and then lines.
Step 2 – Explain the rules:
  • The first pair in each line will come to the middle of the mat.
  • One partner will throw the other using a single leg takedown.
  • The other partner will try to be the first person to correctly control the arm and head of their opponent.
  • If they can do this and be the first one then they will earn a point for their line.
  • Switch roles.
Step 3 – Takeaways
  • Show control when throwing your partner, and have good falls.
  • Maintain good control with your arms and legs.
  • Go quickly to be the first person to finish.
Step 4
  • Continue until everyone plays 2 – 4 games.
