Drill: Punch Jumps
Equipment needed: 1 small square pad per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: Students will practice having good HOPPING by demonstrating their ability to hop with both feet at the same time while aiming to punch a target that is directly above them.
Teaching SKILLZ:
NEUROBICS – Instead of counting normally, the instructor can count by colors, animals, or another age-appropriate category in order to connect the left and right hemispheres of the brain and keep the students engaged in the activity.
VISUAL PROCESSING – The student must be able to see where the pad is above their head, jump upwards to punch the pad, and not jump backwards.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Have the students sitting with the instructor.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The 1st student in each line will stand up and face the instructor.
  • The instructor will hold the pad over the students head and then start counting.
  • On each count the student must jump up and attempt to punch the pad that is over them with one hand.
  • They will do this alternating for 10 reps.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Hands up when you are punching.
  • Eyes open to see the pad.
  • Punch hard on each rep.
Step 5
  • Continue until each person has 2-3 turns.
