Skill: HOPPING
Drill: Around the World
Equipment needed: 5 rings
Instructors needed: One per group
Description: The students will practice their hopping skills by hopping from one ring to another while facing forward at all times. This will help them build good gross motor skills and balance.
Teaching SKILLZ: TRICKERY
  • The instructor can call out a color that is not there, or just say “go” instead of calling out a color in order to keep the student engaged and enhance their auditory processing.
Brain SKILLZ: AUDITORY PROCESSING
  • The student must be able to jump into the correct color ring when the instructor calls out a color. Since the student has to face forwards at all times, they are responding to an auditory cue and relying less on what they see.
Step 1
  • Divide your students into groups.
Step 2 – Setting up the Drill:
  • For each group you will need five rings set on the mat with one ring in the middle, and the other four set to the left, right, front, and back of the middle ring.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • You are going to stand in the middle ring.
  • I am going to call out a color and you will hop into that ring while facing forward at all times.
  • You will hop into each color ring at least once.
  • Your goal is to not let your feet come apart as you hop.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Take fast hops
  • Keep your feet together.
  • Hop high.
Step 5
  • Continue until each student has 3 turns.
