Equipment needed:
One block and wave cushion per group
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: In this drill the students will build their knowledge of their vision words with a quickness drill.
Teaching SKILLZ:
CHOICES – The instructor can ask the students to pick a partner in ten seconds, and put them into opposite teams to they are competing against each other. This gives them the chance to work with the people they want to work with, which can motivate them to beat their friend even more. The choice in the activity will also empower the students, as they will feel more in control over what they are doing.
Brain SKILLZ:
LONG TERM MEMORY – The student must be able to remember the definition of the character words while they do this drill. This works on their ability to recall information that they have learned in the past, as they have to say the correct definition of whatever word the instructor calls out.
Step 1
Pair your students up with a partner.
Step 2 - Setting Up the Drill:
Set up a wave cushion with a block on top and have the pair’s line up on opposite sides of the bag .
Step 3 - Explain the Rules:
The instructor will say a character word and the first person to grab the block gets to say the definition.
If they answer with the proper definition, then their team gets a point and their opponent has to do 10 push-ups.
If they answer with the wrong definition then they have to do 10 push-ups. The other team does not get a point.
Description: In this drill, the students will put their memory of character words to the test by playing a game of memory.
Teaching SKILLZ:
HEALTHY COMPETITION – The instructor can see which team can have the highest number of repeats without messing up. On top of this, the instructor can also give the lines silly names, like “Hamburgers vs. Hotdogs” in order to motivate the students to win as a team.
Brain SKILLZ:
WORKING MEMORY – The students must be able to remember the order in which the words are spoken, and recite that order while adding on their own word at the end. This works on their ability to hold onto information while they perform a task.
Step 1
Have your students make a big circle.
Step 2 - Setting Up the Drill:
Choose one student to go first. That student will say a character word, such as “courage.”
Step 3 - Explain the Rules:
The student to the left will say the first word and then add another word. For example: “courage-perseverance”
Repeat the drill adding on character words until one student messes up. When they do, the students must all do 20 push-ups.
Step 4 - Takeaways:
Practice character words by memory
Step 5
You can make it fun by challenging them to make it all the way around the circle, and if so, the instructors will do 20 push-ups.
Description: In this drill the students will play a game of speed ball while repeating the definition of character lessons.
Teaching SKILLZ:
EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION – If the student says the wrong definition, if they do not define the word within the time limit, or if they drop the ball, then the student will have ten pushups, and then they can play again.
Brain SKILLZ:
DIVIDED ATTENTION – The students must be able to see the ball coming towards them, catch it, and say the definition of the word they heard, and another vision word before they can throw it to another student. This works on their ability to focus on multiple things at once, as they have to say their word or definition and throw the ball at another student, while during the game making sure they are watching for the ball to come towards them.
Step 1
Have your students make a big circle.
Step 2 - Setting Up the Drill:
Hand th ball off to the first student
Step 3 - Explain the Rules:
The first student will start by saying a character word and then they will throw the ball to a student.
The student must catch the ball and then say the correct definition within five seconds.
If they drop the ball, say the wrong definition, or they can’t define the word within five seconds then they have to do ten push-ups.
Step 4 - Takeaways:
This is a great drill that builds reaction time while at the same time helps the students learn their character definitions.
Description: In this drill the student will test their spelling skills while kicking a target and racing against their opponent.
Teaching SKILLZ:
HEALTHY COMPETITION – The instructor can award a point to the line that completed their kicks the fastest. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins. The instructor can also give the lines silly names, like “Hamburgers vs. Hotdogs” in order to motivate the students to win as a team.
Brain SKILLZ:
LONG TERM MEMORY – The students must be able to kick the target while spelling out the word that the instructor calls out. This works on their ability to recall information that they have learned in the past, as they have to spell a word they hear.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines with no more than six per line.
Step 2 - Setting Up the Drill:
The first student in each line will stand in guarding stance in front of the instructor.
Step 3 - Explain the Rules:
The instructor will say a character word and the students must spell the word by kicking the clapper target and saying one letter on each kick. For example: d-e-s-i-r-e would be six kicks.
The first student to spell the word correctly is the winner.
Step 4 - Takeaways:
Multi Tasking with spelling and kicks
Step 5
Repeat the process until every student has a turn.
Description: The students will practice VISION by creating a 10 move freestyle to show their classmates. They will use pride by making something they made all by themselves and showing it off to the class.
Teaching SKILLZ:
UP THE REP – The instructor can do a warm-up round, where the students have to make a five move combination, but all the techniques have to have really bad technique. This will warm up their brains to making combinations, but it will also allow them to be silly and do their moves in a funny way.
Brain SKILLZ:
LONG TERM MEMORY – The students must be able to string together the moves that they know into a ten move combination. This works on their ability to recall information that they have learned in the past, as they have to have a variety of moves in their combinations.
Step 1
Spread out the students on the mat
Step 2 - Setting Up the Drill:
Make sure every student has enough area around them
Step 3 - Explain the Rules:
The students will have 3 minutes to create a 10 move freestyle
Once the time is up, line the students on the wall
Then they will show the class what they came up with
Step 4 - Takeaways:
Make it your own to have pride with what you made
Cheer on your teammate to give them encouragement
Perform strong so you put on a great show
Step 5
Continue until everyone has performed their freestyle
Description: The students will work on their VISION by learning that it takes courage to do things that are hard or scary like jumping and rolling over pads.first.
Teaching SKILLZ:
CHOICES – The instructor can let the students choose what speed they would like to go: slow, medium, or fast. The choice in the activity will empower the students, as they will feel more in control over what they are doing.
Brain SKILLZ:
RESPONSE INHIBITION – The students must be able to run to the pads and do a forward roll while jumping into it. This works on their ability to complete a task despite distraction, the distraction being any fear or doubts they may have going into the drill.
Step 1
Divide the class into lines.
Step 2 - Setting Up the Drill:
At the opposite end of the mat, place one kicking shield long-ways and two more perpendicular to it set end to end to create a landing zone.
Step 3 - Explain the Rules:
Make sure each student knows how to do a forward roll.
You will run and jump over the first pad.
Then putting your hands down first, tuck and roll over the remaining two pads.
Then run to the end of the line.
Step 4 - Takeaways:
The goal is to have the courage to not stop and land softly.
Description: Students will practice having good VISION by demonstrating their ability to demonstrate their ability to quickly be able to say their vision word for the cycle.
Teaching SKILLZ:
EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION – The instructor can allow the winners of each round to be safe from the exercise that one of the instructors picks, with the exercise being around 5-10 reps.
Brain SKILLZ:
AUDITORY PROCESSING – The students must hear the music stop and see where the ball is. If the ball is next to them, they must say their word. This works on their ability to respond to audio cues, as they must say their word when the music stops if they are next to the ball.
Step 1
Divide your students into circles.
Step 2 - Setting Up the Drill:
Have the students sitting with the instructor.
Step 3 - Explain the Rules:
The students will stand up and the instructor will give 1 student the dodgeball to start.
When the music starts the students will start to pass the ball around the circle.
When the music stops the 2 students on either side of the person with the ball must say their word.
Whoever says it first will stay in the other is out, if there is a tie then it will be decided by rock, paper, scissors!
Step 4 - Takeaways:
Don’t throw the ball hard so it’s difficult to catch.
Description: n this drill we will work on the students’ ability to work together, plan ahead and remember their words.
Teaching SKILLZ:
EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION – The instructor can allow the winning team to be safe from the exercise that one of the instructors picks, with the exercise being around 5-10 reps.
Brain SKILLZ:
SPEED OF PROCESSING – The students must be able to throw the ball to the other team and say their word, while also keeping track of who hit the ball last in order to not have the same person hitting the ball every time. This works on their ability to make the correct choices quickly and accurately, as they have to make sure that a team member hits the ball quickly or they might be out.
Step 1
Divide the class into four groups.
Step 2 - Setting Up the Drill:
Assign each group to ¼ of the mat.
Step 3 - Explain the Rules:
They must pass the ball back and forth saying their word every time they pass it.
The same student cannot catch the ball twice in a row.
After 30 seconds, the instructor will say “stop”. Whichever team has possession of the ball is out.
The game continues until only one team remains standing.
If the ball is thrown to a team that is out, the throwing team is eliminated.
Step 4 - Takeaways:
Ability to think ahead and work strategy with word selection
Step 5
Make the game more challenging by using the definitions instead.
Description: In this drill the students will build their knowledge of their vision words with a log roll relay.
Teaching SKILLZ:
TRICKERY – The instructor can say things like “ghost” and “gogurt” in order to try and trick the students. This will enhance their auditory processing skills as they have to listen for the whole word, and not just the sounds in the word.
Brain SKILLZ:
WORKING MEMORY – The students must be able to remember the definition as they roll the pad down the mat. This works on their ability to hold onto information while they do a task, as if they answer with the wrong word, they do not get a point for their team.
Step 1
Divide your class into lines and have them line up on one end of the training mat.
Step 2 - Setting Up the Drill:
For each line you will lay a wave bag cushion on its side.
Step 3 - Explain the Rules:
The instructor will say a definition and then say “go.”
You will race to the opposite end of the training mat by rolling the wave bag cushion.
The first student to the other side gets to answer the question.
If they answer the question correctly then the other student has to do 10 push-ups.
If they answer it incorrectly then they have to do 10 push-ups.
Description: In this drill we will work on the ability to move and dodge, while at the same time reinforcing their memory of the vision words.
Teaching SKILLZ:
HEALTHY COMPETITION – The instructor can see which student can be in for thirty seconds without getting hit. After the thirty second time cap, the instructor should call freeze and switch the person in the middle so more people can get a turn to be the ninja in the barrel.
Brain SKILLZ:
VISUAL PROCESSING – The students must throw the ball at a moving target while saying their definition, and the person in the middle has to dodge the ball while saying the name of their word. This works on their ability to make sense of what they see, as they have to aim for the person in the middle, and the person in the middle has to spot the ball and dodge it.
Step 1
Have the class form a large circle.
Step 2 - Setting Up the Drill:
Have one student start in the center of the circle.
Step 3 - Explain the Rules:
Throw the ball at the person in the middle and say the definition of your word.
The person in the middle must dodge while saying their word.
If the person in the middle is hit but says their word they get a “freebie” and stays in the middle. A max of 2 freebies is allowed.
Step 4 - Takeaways:
Work on vision words while working on dodging and moving.
Step 5
Continue until each student has a turn in the middle.
Description: The students will play a fun vision game by getting the first shot to answer the quiz question if they kick the pad the furthest.
Teaching SKILLZ:
EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION – The instructor can allow the winning team to be safe from the exercise that one of the instructors picks, with the exercise being around 5-10 reps.
Brain SKILLZ:
VISUAL PROCESSING – In order to answer the question, the students must hit the pad farther than the other teams. This works on their ability to make sense of what they see, since if they do not hit the middle of the pad with their kick, the pad will not be able to go far.
Step 1
Divide you students into teams and have them line up on one end of the mat.
Step 2 - Setting Up the Drill:
For each team you will need an instructor to hold a small square target.
Step 3 - Explain the Rules:
I will quiz you on the vision words and their meaning.
To get the first shot to answer the question, you must kick the target further than your opponents.
If you answer correctly then you get a point for your team.
If you answer incorrectly then your opponent gets a chance to answer the question.
The team with the most points at the end of the drill is the winner.
Step 4 - Takeaways:
You can make it fun by making the kick something hard, such as jump-spin-hook kick.
*If you do not have vision words for each belt, then you can quiz them on various character lessons.
Description: In this drill the students will play a game of four-square while adding character development to the game.
Teaching SKILLZ:
HEALTHY COMPETITION – The instructor can see which student can set a record for the school for the highest number of rounds spent in the king square, or beat the previous record that another student holds.
Brain SKILLZ:
VISUAL PROCESSING – The student must be able to see the ball come towards them, let it hit their square, and then hit it into another student’s square while saying the name of their word. This works on their ability to participate in visual activities.
Step 1
Mark off four squares on your training mat for a game of four-square. This game works with a variety of sizes for each square depending on the size of your mat.
Step 2 - Setting Up the Drill:
Pick four students to start the game and have one stand in each square. Have the rest of the students make a straight line to rotate into the game.
Step 3 - Explain the Rules:
The person in the top right square is the king and always starts the serve until he/ she is out.
The ball must bounce in your square first before you hit it into another square.
You can only “popcorn” once which means that after the ball bounces in your square, you can hit it straight up in the air before you serve it to another square.
If you miss the ball or you do not hit it into another square, then you’re out and the next person rotates in.
Step 4 - Takeaways:
Focusing on coordination and learning character words
Step 5
Before you hit the ball, you must say a character word.
If you hit the ball and do not say a character word, then you are out.
Description: The students will practice VISION by racing against their peers to break a board with a palm strike while saying your VISION work or definition.
Teaching SKILLZ:
TRICKERY – The instructor can say things like “ghost” and “gogurt” in order to try and trick the students. This will enhance their auditory processing skills as they have to listen for the whole word, and not just the sounds in the word.
Brain SKILLZ:
VISUAL PROCESSING – The student must be able to run down to the board and hit the board in the correct spot with the correct technique in order to break it. This works on their ability to make sense of what they see, as they have to recognize that the top middle of the board is their target for a palm strike.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines
Step 2 - Setting Up the Drill:
An instructor will be holding a board at the other end of the mat
Step 3 - Explain the Rules:
The students will run to the opposite side of the mat
They will break the board will a palm strike while saying their VISION word
Once they finish they will tag the next person in line to go
The first team to finish will get a point for their line
Step 4 - Takeaways:
Run fast so you can get to the board first
Hit hard so the board breaks in one shot
Remember your word so you do not have to repeat the break
