Skill: LISTENING
Drill: Happy or Sad?
Equipment needed: None
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: The students will practice having good LISTENING by demonstrating their ability to pick up emotions of other as they talk. This will challenge them socially as this is one of the biggest challenges for kids on the spectrum.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
The 1st student in line will stand up and face the instructor.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The instructor will say 3 phrases that use emotion, the student must decide whether the instructor was happy or sad.
  • Ex. “I really liked being able to play at the park today” (happy)
  • On round 2 you can have them work with a partner if available.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Listen to how your instructors voice changes.
  • Watch their face to get clues.
  • Make sure that you don’t get distracted.
Step 5
  • Continue until each student has multiple turns.
