Skill:
Intensity
Drill:
1 to 10
Equipment needed:
None
Instructors needed:
One per ten students
Description:
In this drill the students are going to practice punching at different levels of intensity so that they can feel how hard they can punch at their highest effort.
Teaching SKILLZ:
CHOICES – The instructor can give the students a choice each round on what technique they would like to use. On round one, they can use any strike, on round two, any block, etc. This will help motivate the students as they will feel empowered from being able to choose what they are doing in the drill.
Brain SKILLZ:
WORKING MEMORY – The students must be able to do their techniques from worst to best, remembering what they did previously and deciding how they can get a little better on their next move. This works on their ability to hold onto information while completing a task, as they have to make sure that they do the next rep a little better than they did previously.
Step 1
Have your students line up spaced apart and facing the front of the training deck.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • On a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being very sloppy) have your students punch at a level 1 when you yell.
  • Yell three times.
  • Repeat the drill increasing the level of intensity one number higher, and so forth until your reach the level of 10.
  • You should see a significant level of intensity in every student at level 10. You can repeat the drill with other strikes, kicks, and blocks.
  • Repeat the drill by counting non-stop from 1 to 10 and having them increase their intensity at each level.
  • Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Learn to distinguish between the various levels of power from 1 to 10
  • Step 5
  • At the end of the drill, ask the students how they felt when they all punched at a level 1 compared to a level 10.
