Skill: Intensity
Drill: Catch and Break
Equipment needed: One re-breakable board and small ball per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: In this drill the students will build intensity in their strikes by tossing a ball and catching it then breaking a board.
Teaching SKILLZ:
EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION – If the student does not break the board, or drops the ball, then they will have five jumping jacks.
Brain SKILLZ:
DIVIDED ATTENTION – The student must be able to throw the ball up in the air, break the board, and catch the ball. This works on their ability to focus on multiple things at one time, as they have to break the board and catch a ball in the air.
Step 1
Divide your students into even lines.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
When the instructor says “go” the first student from each line will toss the ball in the air and then break the board with a palm strike.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • If the board doesn’t break, the student must toss the ball in the air again before they strike the board.
  • The first student to break the board gets a point for their line.
  • Continue until each student has at least three turns.
  • The line with the most points is the winner.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Must coorindate catching the ball and then breaking the board with intensity.
Step 5
  • You can add variety by changing the strike to a hammer fist, knife hand strike, etc.
