Drill: Heavy High Blocks
Equipment needed: 1 small pad per line
Instructors needed: 1 per line
Description: Students will practice having good INTENSITY by demonstrating their ability to push themselves as they have to battle the instructor to lift up their high blocks.
Teaching SKILLZ: Intrinsic Motivation
Students push themselves to hold a strong stance and block against pressure because they want to prove their own strength.
Brain SKILLZ: Attention Control
Students must stay focused on the instructor’s signal and maintain concentration to apply strength in the block without getting distracted.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines.
Step 2 – Setup the Drill
Have the students sitting with the instructor.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules
  • The 1st student in each line will stand up and face the instructor.
  • The students will chamber for their high block, the instructor will hold the pad just above the students arms.
  • When the instructor says ”GO” the students will attempt to lift up their high block.
  • The instructor will apply pressure as the student is doing their block.
Step 4 – Takeaways
  • Good stances makes your block easier to do.
  • Strong blocks start with good chambers.
  • Don’t give up even if it’s hard.
Step 5
  • Continue until each person has 2-3 turns.
