Skill: Intensity
Drill: King of Chairs
Equipment needed: One chair per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: The students will work on the magnitude of their intensity by stepping up a chair and front kicking a target for five reps.
Teaching SKILLZ:
INTRINSIC MOTIVATION – On the second round, the instructor can explain to the students that if they do ten kicks, they will make their instructors proud. If they are able to do fifteen kicks, then they will make their parents proud too. If they are able to do twenty kicks, they will make themselves proud too.
Brain SKILLZ:
RESPONSE INHIBITION – The student must be able to step on the chair, do their kicks, and then step down without taking a long break. This works on their ability to complete a task despite distraction, the distraction being their legs getting tired.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
For each line, you will need a chair and an instructor holding a target behind the chair.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • You will step onto the chair and kick the target with both legs, and then step off the chair.
  • You will do this for five reps.
  • Your goal is to not lose power as you get to the final reps and your legs are tired.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Don’t stop moving keep going even when its tough.
  • Kick strong every kick not just some of them.
  • Keep your hands up the whole time.
Step 5
  • Continue until each student has at least three turns.
