Skill: Intensity
Drill: Pad Pendulum
Equipment needed: One foam sword and wave bag per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: In this drill the students will practice intensity in the execution of their punches. The students will punch the pad as the instructor swings a foam sword slow, then medium, and then fast.
Teaching SKILLZ:
EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION – If the student gets hit by the noodle, they will have five pushups.
Brain SKILLZ:
VISUAL PROCESSING – The student must punch the pad without getting hit with the noodle. This works on the ability to participate in visual activities, as they have to track the moving noodle and estimate when they should punch, to not get hit with the noodle.
Step 1
Divide your class into even lines.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
For each line you will need an instructor holding a foam sword and a wave bag.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • You will punch the bag five times while trying not to get hit.
  • If you get hit then you must start over.
  • If you get hit three times, then you are out.
  • If you hit the pad five times without getting hit, then the instructor will begin to swing the sword at medium speed and the same rules apply.
  • Once you reach five punches the instructor will swing the sword at a fast speed and the same rules apply.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Work on the speed and intensity of the strikes to avoid getting hit
Step 5
  • Continue until each person in line has at least two turns.
