Skill: Intensity
Drill: 4 Way Tug of War
Equipment needed: Four white belts per group
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: The students will practice intensity by applying magnitude in a fun game of 4-way tug-of-war. This is great for muscle development, balance, and endurance.
Teaching SKILLZ:
HEALTHY COMPETITION – The students can keep track of their wins in their group, and the student with the highest number of wins in each group will be the champions. The champion of each group can verse each other in a final game of tug of war, with instructors subbing in if there are not enough students for a 4-way tug of war. The student who wins that round will become the ultimate tug of war champion.
Brain SKILLZ:
RESPONSE INHIBITION – The student must be able to pull without stopping in order to win the game of tug of war. This works on their ability to complete a task despite distraction, as they must be able to pull for as long as they can, despite their arms being tired and their hands sore.
Step 1
Divide your students into groups of four.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Tie four white belts together in the middle so that the white belts form a “+” sign.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • Select one group to go first by having each student stand on one end of the belts and have them hold the belt tightly.
  • Use tape to mark lines on front of each student that is approximately 3’ away from them to designate the line that they must try and get the middle of the belts to cross over.
  • When I say “go” you will each begin to pull on the belts.
  • The first person to get the middle of the belts over their line is the winner.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Work on balance to win for your team
  • Work of strength to pull the belt
Step 5
  • Continue until each student has at least two turns.
