Skill: CATCHING
Drill: Standing Catches
Equipment needed: One ring, One ball per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: This drill teaches students how to throw and catch a ball straight up instead of haphazardly and be able to catch with ease. This is great for hand-eye-coordination, which applies to other sports and activities.
Teaching SKILLZ:
UP THE REP – The students can start throwing the ball up low, and throw it up at a medium height, and then a high height in order to get better with every rep.
Brain SKILLZ:
WORKING MEMORY – The student must be able to catch the ball while remembering to stay inside of the circle that they are in. This would improve their working memory because they have to set a mental boundary for themselves and remember that they cannot go outside of their ring.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Place one hoop on the ground for each line and give the first student the ball while standing in the hoop.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • You will throw the ball straight up.
  • Without moving out of the circle, you must catch the ball.
  • Try to throw the ball even higher on each throw.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Throw it straight up.
  • Keep your eye on the ball.
  • Hug the ball fast.
Step 5
  • Continue so that each student has 3 turns.
