Skill: CATCHING
Drill: Side to Side
Equipment needed: 2 Colored Rings and 1 Ball Per Line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: The students will practice CATCHING by running to the colored ring called by the instructor and then holding our hands out to catch the ball thrown by the instructor.
Teaching SKILLZ:
TRICKERY – The instructor call call out a color that is not there, or they can call out a color and point to the other ring in order to enhance the student’s auditory processing even further and keep them engaged.
Brain SKILLZ:
AUDITORY PROCESSING – The student must hear the audio cue of the instructor calling out a color of one of the colored rings, and run sideways towards it.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
For each line set two different colored rings about 4-5ft apart.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The instructor will call a color of a ring.
  • The student must keep their belly facing the instructor as they run sideways to that ring.
  • Put both feet in the ring and make sure your hands are ready.
  • Then do your best to catch the ball when the instructor throws it.
  • Finally, carefully toss the ball back to the instructor.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Move fast from side to side.
  • Keep your eyes on the ball.
  • Make sure your arms are out and ready.
Step 5
  • Continue so that each student has at least 2 turns.
