Skill: CATCHING
Drill: Crazy Catches
Equipment needed: Two focus mitts and one small square target per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: In this drill the students will practice catching an object with pads on his/ her hands.
Teaching SKILLZ:
EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION – If the student drops the pad, then they have three squat jumps. If they are able to catch all of the pads, then the instructor will do three squat jumps.
Brain SKILLZ:
VISUAL PROCESSING – The students must be able to catch the targets while having hand pads on. This works on their ability to participate in visual activities, as they must track the moving targets in the air and catch them despite having mitts on their hands.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Have the group of students sit on the side of the mat. Pick one student to go first and have that student stand on the mat. Stand approximately 4’ away with a small square target
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • When I toss the pad in the air, you must try and catch it with your mitts.
  • If you drop the pad, then you have to do 3 squat jumps.
  • If you do not drop the pad, then I will do 3 squat jumps.
  • Have the student go three times, standing at least 2’ further each time.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Work on hand eye coordination
  • Learn to catch with mitts on your hand
Step 5
  • Continue until each student has at least two turns.
