Skill: CATCHING
Drill: Crazy Bridge
Equipment needed: 1 Dodgeball & 3 Slammer Pads
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: The students will practice CATCHING by demonstrating their ability to catch a ball from varying distances while on top of an unstable surface. This will challenge them physically by requiring them to adjust to the different distances the ball will be coming from.
Teaching SKILLZ:
CHOICES – The instructor can ask the student how fast they want to go: slow, medium, or fast. This will empower the students since they have a choice in the activity, and it will allow the students to choose their own difficulty.
Brain SKILLZ:
VISUAL PROCESSING – The students must be able to jump from pad to pad, while catching dodgeballs in between jumps. This works on their ability to participate in visual activities and make sense of what they see, as they need to judge the distance between the instructor and themselves in order to catch and throw correctly. They also have to judge the distance between themselves and the next pad, so they are able to jump from pad to pad.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
For each line, you will need an instructor.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The 1st student will face the 3 slammer pads that are spaced 3’ apart going down the mat.
  • When the instructor says “GO” the student will jump on to the first pad the instructor will throw the ball from the other side of the pads.
  • The student will throw the ball back and continue that process until they reach the other side of the bridge.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Make your arms into a basket so the ball is easy to catch.
  • Throw the ball back nice.
  • Keep your eye on the ball the entire time.
Step 5
  • Continue so that each student has at least 2 turns.
