Skill: CATCHING
Drill: Drop Catches
Equipment needed: 1 small pad per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: The students will practice having good CATCHING by demonstrating their ability to catch a object that is dropped from over their head.
Teaching SKILLZ:
NEUROBICS – While dropping the ball, the instructor can count by an age-appropriate category, like colors or animals. This will connect the left and right hemispheres of the brain and keep the students engaged in the activity.
Brain SKILLZ:
VISUAL PROCESSING – The student must be able to track the ball coming towards them, and catch it at the right time so they do not miss it. This works on their ability to process visual activity.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Have the students sitting in a line.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The 1st student will stand up and the instructor will hold the pad over their head.
  • When the instructor counts they will drop the pad, the student will then have to catch the pad.
  • They will do this for 3 catches, once done they can go to the end of the line.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Keep your eyes open as you play.
  • Have your arms out to catch the ball.
  • Hug the ball as it gets close.
Step 5
  • Continue until each person has 2-3 turns.
