Skill: BLOCKING
Drill: Board the Ship
Equipment needed: 6 Small Square pads & 3 Slammer pads per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: The students will practice BLOCKING by demonstrating that they can do multiple blocks while standing on an unstable object. This will challenge them physically by requiring them to do strong blocks while also controlling their balance so that they do not fall off the pads.
Teaching SKILLZ:
EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION – If the student can complete their turn without falling off the pads or missing their blocks, the instructor will do three pushups.
Brain SKILLZ:
VISUAL PROCESSING – The student must be able to see where the pad is and jump without hitting the ground, as well as watch when the pads are coming towards them so they can block the pads correctly.
Step 1
Divide your class into lines.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
For each line, you will need an instructor.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The first student will stand up and face the pads which are spaced 3’ apart going down the mat.
  • The student will do their first jump on to the slammer pad.
  • Once the student is on the pad the instructor will throw 2 small square targets at them.
  • The students must block the pads then advance on to the next pad, the process will continue until they complete all the pads.
  • The goal is to make it across the “water” without falling, if they fall then they must restart.
  • But if they tag the instructor then they earn 1 ninja point.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Take big jumps to each pad.
  • Keep your eyes on the pads.
  • Do your best to not fall.
Step 5
  • Continue so that each student has at least 2 turns.
