Drill: Elevator Blocks
Equipment needed: 3 kicking shields per line
Instructors needed: One per group
Description: The students will practice blocking while standing on top of pads. This will teach them how to balance as well as engaging core, leg, and balance muscles.
Teaching SKILLZ:
UP THE REP – On the first level, the students can do a really sloppy high block. On the second, they can do an average high block. On the third level, they can do their strongest high blocks.
RESPONSE INHIBITION – The student must be able to do their blocks while keeping their balance and not acting silly with their instructor.
Step 1
Divide your students into groups.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
For each group you will need 3 kicking shields.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • Level 1, they will step up onto a single kicking shield and perform 2 blocks.
  • Level 2, use 2 kicking shields and perform 2 blocks without falling off the pad.
  • Level 3, use 3 shields and perform 2 blocks without falling off the pad.
  • It may be necessary that the instructor spot the student on levels 2-3 so that they do not get hurt if/when they fall.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Stand strong.
  • Block strong.
  • Keep your head high.
Step 5
  • Continue until each student has two turns. On the second turn have the student perform 3 blocks on each level.
