Skill: Blocking
Drill: Stand Up
Equipment needed: 1 Foam Noodle
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: The students will practice BLOCKING by being able to quickly stand and demonstrate a block before the noodle hits them. This game will challenge the students Physically and Intellectually as they must listen for the words “GO” and have to be able to get up fast enough to not get hit.
Teaching SKILLZ:
TRICKERY – The instructor can say another word that sounds like “go” in order to trick the students, like “gopher” and “ghost”. This will further test their auditory processing, as they have to listen for the whole word and not just the sounds of the word.
Brain SKILLZ:
AUDITORY PROCESSING – The students must be able to hear the instructor say “go”, and then stand up and block the noodle without getting hit. This works on their ability to listen and respond to verbal commands.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
For each line, you will need an instructor holding the foam noodle.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The 1st student in line will lay down with their head toward the instructor who will also be laying their belly.
  • When one instructor says “GO” the instructor and the 1st student in each line will stand up.
  • The student will race the instructor to stand up fast, when the instructor gets up they will try to tap the student on the head with noodle.
  • If the student can do the block correctly without getting hit they win that round.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Keep your eyes open to see the noodle.
  • Block fast so you don’t get hit.
  • Listen for the words “GO”.
Step 5
  • Continue so that each student has at least 2 turns.
