Skill: Teamwork
Drill: Pad Stack Challenge
Equipment needed: 5 Small Pads Per Line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: In this drill students will develop good TEAMWORK by working together to balance a growing stack of pads.
Teaching SKILLZ:
INTRINSIC MOTIVATION – If they students want to make the instructors proud, they can make it do three pads. If they want to make the instructors proud and their parents proud, then they will make it above three pads.
Brain SKILLZ:
ATTENTION CONTROL – The students must be able to hold their middle stance and hold the pads up as strong as they can, as their partner needs to do the same thing and if one of them gives up, the stack will fall. This focuses on their ability to fully complete a task over a period of time, without letting them being tired get in the way.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Have the first 2 students in each line face each other. Have each student first grab their Left forearm with their right hand. Then lock arms forming a square with their forearms.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • Have each student go to a middle stance.
  • The instructor will then stack one pad on their arms and count to 3.
  • If the pad doesn’t fall, they will then add a second pad and count to 3.
  • Continue until you get to 5 pads, and hold for 5 seconds.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Stay low in your stance so your arms stay level.
  • Keep your arms up as long as you can!
  • Feel the burn!
Step 5
  • Continue until everyone goes for 2-3 turns.
