Skill: Teamwork
Drill: Cross the Bridge
Equipment needed: 2 kicking shields per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: Students will practice TEAMWORK by demonstrating their ability to work together with a teammate to build bridge with kicking shields that will lead them across the mat.
Teaching SKILLZ:
HEALTHY COMPETITION – The instructor can split the class into two teams, or more depending on the size of the class. The instructor can see which team can make it to the end the fastest, without falling off the pads. The instructor can also give the teams silly names, like “Hamburgers vs. Hotdogs” in order to motivate the students to win as a team.
Brain SKILLZ:
ATTENTION CONTROL – The students must be able to get from one side of the mat to the other while balancing on pads, and handing pads from person to person. This works on their ability to focus on one thing for an extended period of time, as they have to make sure they never fall off the pads until they get to the other end of the mat, which might take a couple minutes.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Have two students stand up.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The 1st two students up will have to stand on 1 kicking shield together.
  • When the instructor says “GO” the student on the back of the pad will reach behind them and pick up the kicking shield and pass it to the person in the front.
  • The person in front will place that pad in front so that both people can move on to it.
  • This process will continue all the way down the mat.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Be a team so that you can cross the river.
  • Take turns passing the pads to each other.
  • Go fast so you can show that you are a good team.
Step 5
  • Continue until each person has 2-3 turns.
