Drill: Circle Challenge
Equipment needed: None
Instructors needed: One per group
Description: In this drill the students will take turns calling out a Martial Arts move that all of the students in the group must perform correctly. If every student performs the move correctly, then the instructor must do 5 push-ups. If one person in the group makes a mistake, then the group must do 5 push-ups.
Teaching SKILLZ:
EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION – The students all must do five squat jumps if someone in the circle makes a mistake. But, if no one makes a mistake, the instructor will do five pushups.
Brain SKILLZ:
SPEED OF PROCESSING – The student must be able to do a move using their left and rights. This works on their ability to complete a task quickly and accurately, as they must hear the instructor call out left or right, along with a move, and do it quick before the instructor says freeze.
Step 1
Divide your students into several groups and have them circle up as shown in the picture.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Select one student to begin the drill by calling out a Martial Arts move with a specific hand or foot. For example: “Right punch.”
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • All of the students will then execute the move using the correct hand or foot.
  • If they all perform the correct move with the correct hand or foot, then instructor must do 5 push-ups.
  • If someone in the group makes a mistake, then they must all do 5 push-ups.
  • This drill is challenging because they are in a circle which makes it hard to copy the proper hand or foot.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Work together as a team to get the instructors to do push-ups.
  • React to the command for the moves that get called out

  • Continue until each student has a turn.
