Skill: Technique
Drill: Back Against The Wall
Equipment needed: One wave master, two slammer pads, and kicking target per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: The students will build technique in their front kick by hitting a target while keeping their chamber knee high and back straight.
Teaching SKILLZ:
CHOICES – The instructor can have the students choose which kick they would like to do on each round: front kick, round kick, or side kick, doing a different kick on each round. The choice will empower the students, as they will have some control over how they practice.
Brain SKILLZ:
VISUAL PROCESSING – The student must be able to see the pads in front of them, and kick the clapper pad without knocking anything over. This works on their ability to make sense of what they see, as they must judge how high they need to get their knee so they are able to clear the pads on the ground.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
For each line, lay a stack of slammer pads on the ground in front of a wave master. You will also need an instructor holding a kicking target in front of the slammer pads
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • You will stand with your back against the wave master and the stack of pads right up to your toes.
  • You will front kick the target ten times while keeping your back against the wave master.
  • Your goal is to also not hit the slammer pads with your feet as you kick the target.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Chamber your knee to your chest.
  • Kick with the ball or instep of your foot.
  • Re-chamber your knee before you put it down.
  • On the second turn, have the student start over if their back is not against the wave master, or if they hit the stack of slammer pads with their foot.
  • On the third round, make it a contest to see who can kick the target ten times in a row the fastest without making a mistake.
Step 5
  • Continue until each student has at least three turns.
