Skill: Technique
Drill: Side Kick Shuffle
Equipment needed: Four rings, one kicking shield per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: The students will work on their side kick technique by practicing proper foot placement. By using one continuous motion we will be reinforcing technique and agility.
Teaching SKILLZ:
NEUROBICS – The instructor can pick a category, like “superheroes” or “candy”, and every time the student does a kick, they must name something from that category. The instructor can also give them math problems to solve as they kick instead. This will keep the students engaged, as well as help connect the left and right hemispheres of the brain.
Brain SKILLZ:
VISUAL PROCESSING – The student must see the rings, and make sure they step behind their leg into the next ring. They then must sidekick the pad on the appropriate spot with the correct part of the foot. This works on their ability to participate in visual activities, as they cannot step outside of the rings and they have to kick a specific spot on the pad.
Step 1
Divide the students into lines.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
For each line, you will need to place four rings on the floor in a straight line.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • You will start with your lead leg in the first ring.
  • Then step with the rear leg, behind the lead, and into the second ring and perform a side kick.
  • Next, place your lead leg into the third ring.
  • Finally, the rear leg steps behind and into the fourth ring, now perform your side kick again.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Chamber your knee to your shoulder.
  • Point your heel at the target.
  • Kick strong and re-chamber.
Step 5
  • Continue until each student has at least three turns.
