Skill: Technique
Drill: Ring Race
Equipment needed: One small ring and large cone per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: The students will hop down the mat while holding a ring on their foot and then place the ring over a cone without using their hands.
Teaching SKILLZ:
EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION – If the student drops the ring, they must stop where they are and do three jumping jacks. After they finish their jumping jacks, they can continue from where they dropped the ring.
Brain SKILLZ:
DIVIDED ATTENTION – The student must be able to hop down the mat while keeping their knee up high, and focus on not dropping the ring. This works on their ability to focus on more than one thing at one time, as while they are hopping they must focus on keeping the ring on their foot, and once they get down to the cone, they must place the ring down while saying on one foot.
Step 1
Divide your students into even lines.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
For each line you will need a small ring and a large cone. Line the students on one end of the mat and place the large cone directly across the mat from each line.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • When I say “go” you will hop down the mat holding the ring on your foot.
  • Once you reach the cone, you will place the ring over the cone and then race back to your line and have a seat.
  • The first person to have a seat is the winner.
  • You must have good technique so that you don’t drop the ring. If you drop the ring then you are automatically disqualified.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Work on balance and leg strength with this race.
Step 5
  • Continue until each student has at least two turns.
