Skill: TECHNIQUE
Drill: Tension Strikes
Equipment needed: None
Instructors needed: 1 per group
Description: In this drill we will be developing the TECHNIQUE we use in our strikes while paying close attention to the rotation of our striking and retraction hands.
Teaching SKILLZ: Modeling
the instructor demonstrates the correct way to perform tension strikes, and students mirror the movement, staying in sync with both technique and timing.
Brain SKILLZ: Working Memory
students must remember the sequence and details (twist both hands, equal retraction, 5-second tension) even when the instructor stops demonstrating.
Step 1
Divide your students into groups
Step 2
  • Have each group make a circle around their instructor.
Step 3 – Explain the rules:
  • Start by having each student hold out a punch, with the other hand in the retraction position.
  • On round 1, students will stay in synch with the instructor as they perform 3 tension punches. (instructor will count 5-second tension punches)
  • The goal is to focus on the rotation of the punching and retraction hands equally.
  • On round 2, the instructor will count, but not demonstrate. (The students must stay together)
  • Then mix up the groups!
Step 4 – Takeaways
  • Try to stay in synch with your friends
  • Don’t forget to twist both hands
  • Try to add power to your tension punches
Step 5
  • Continue until you mix up the groups 2-3 times.
