Skill: Technique
Drill: Drop the Cone
Equipment needed: 1 Wavemaster base, 1 small cone per line
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: In this drill students will build the TECHNIQUE for a strong hook kick by breaking down the parts of a kick and focus with the proper part of the foot.
Teaching SKILLZ:
CHOICES – The instructor can ask the student which leg they would like to use, left or right. The student will feel more comfortable doing the drill, since they were able to have a choice in what they are doing. The next time the student comes up, the instructor can ask if they would like to stick with the same leg, or try the other one and get stronger.
Brain SKILLZ:
VISUAL PROCESSING – The student must be able to see the cone, and judge how far away they need to be in order to hit the cone off the pad with the correct part of the foot. This works on their ability to participate in visual activities.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines. Have 1 instructor to watch each line.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:

Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • Start by lifting your lead leg off to the side of the bag.
  • Hook your knee as to knock the cone off the bag with the bottom of your foot.
  • Do this 3 times then go to the end of the line.
  • On the next round, chamber and execute a “side kick” off to the side of the bag instead of just lifting your leg.
  • Begin to add speed and power.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Keep your eyes on the cone to spot your target.
  • Be sure to use the bottom of your foot, or heel.
  • Make your kicks wide by moving your whole leg when you hook.
Step 5
  • Continue until everyone get 2-3 turns.
