Skill: Technique
Drill: Push the Block
Equipment needed: 1 wavemaster pad, 1 rectangular block
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: The students will work on their side kick chamber technique by holding their chamber high in the air as they use the proper kicking technique to push the block off the pad. This will also increase leg strength with each slow repetition.
Teaching SKILLZ:
CHOICES – The instructor can let the students pick which leg they want to use first, and then on the second round, they can use their other leg. This will empower and motivate the students, since they were able to have a choice in what they are doing.
Brain SKILLZ:
VISUAL PROCESSING – The students have to see the middle of the block, and hit that spot with the heel of their foot with a sidekick. This works on their ability to participate in visual activities, as they must sidekick a small target with the correct part of their foot.
Step 1
Divide the students into lines.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
For each line you will need a wavemaster pad with a rectangular block on top.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The student will perform a proper side kick chamber.
  • Using only the heel, they must slowly push the block straight backwards off the top of the pad.
  • Afterwards they must re-chamber following the proper path back to the original starting chamber position.
  • If they knock the pad over at any time, they must start over.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Chamber their knee to your shoulder.
  • Hit using only their heel.
  • Kick with control.
Step 5
  • Continue until each person has a turn with both legs.
