Skill: Balance
Drill: Crane Challenge
Equipment needed: None
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: Students will practice having good BALANCE by demonstrating their ability to do basic moves while holding their balance on one leg, if they fall then they are out.
Teaching SKILLZ:
NEUROBICS – Instead of saying the names of the moves, the instructor can say the names of colors, superheroes, or another age-appropriate category. This will connect the left and right hemispheres of their brain, and keep the students engaged in the activity.
Brain SKILLZ:
DIVIDED ATTENTION – The students must be able to perform martial arts moves that are called out while keeping one foot off the ground. This works on their ability to focus on multiple things at one time, as they must try not to let their foot touch the ground or hop too much while doing their moves.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
Have the students sitting with the instructor.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The 1st student in the lie will stand up and face the instructor.
  • The instructor will have each of the lines stand in crane stance, they will then call out 3 basic hand techniques.
  • If a student falls then they are out for that round, but if they stay up for all basics then they earn a point.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Keep your leg up in crane position
  • Make your moves look good.
  • Go at your own pace.
Step 5
  • Continue until each person has 2-3 turns.
