Description:
In this drill students will work on their BALANCE when kicking by learning how to properly pivot when performing a side kick by breaking down each movement and balancing at all times.
Teaching SKILLZ:
UP THE REP – The instructor can have the students start by doing all the steps sloppily. Then with average technique, then with the best technique they can. This will help the students learn to practice to get better.
Brain SKILLZ:
WORKING MEMORY – The students must be able to perform their side kick on the pad, while doing all the steps. This works on their ability to hold onto information while performing a task, as they have to remember how to do the different steps to a sidekick and in the correct order.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
For each line, have one instructor holding a kicking shield.
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • The instructor will hold the kicking shield in front for a sidekick.
  • Step 1, the student will pick up the back leg turn the toes away from the kicking shield and put it back down.
  • Step 2, the student will chamber by picking up their kicking knee up.
  • Step 3, the student will kick the kicking shield with their heel
  • Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Point your toes away from the target so you only hit with your heel
  • Chamber high so that your kicks don’t look sloppy.
  • Keep your eyes on your target as you kick
  • Step 5
  • Continue so that each student has at least 2 turns.
