Drill: Number Pick Up
Equipment needed: Four numbered circles per group
Instructors needed: 1 per Line
Description: In this drill the students will build balance on one leg by hopping down the mat and picking up the numbers in order without putting their foot down. This is a great drill for building balance and increasing leg strength.
Teaching SKILLZ:
HEALTHY COMPETITION – The instructor can make it a competition by saying “who can pick up the numbers the fastest, the boys or the girls?” By putting the boys against the girls, it will motivate this age group more, at their social stage of development, boys prefer to work with boys and girls prefer to work with girls.
Brain SKILLZ:
DIVIDED ATTENTION – The student has to remember to keep their leg up the whole time, while hopping down as quick as they can and picking up all of the numbers. They also have to make sure they do not drop the numbers while they are hopping, and they do not put their foot down as they pick them up.
Step 1
Divide your class into several groups with no more than five students per group.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
 
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • Throw 4 numbered circles around a small area of the mat.
  • Pick one student to go first. See if they can pick up all 4 numbers without putting their foot down.
  • Continue until each student has a turn.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Get the numbers in order without putting the foot down.
Step 5
  • On the second round, make it a contest by having two or more groups race and see who can pick up all 4 numbers the fastest without putting their foot down.
