Skill: BALANCE
Drill: Can-Can Kicks
Equipment needed: 1 clapper pad per group
Instructors needed: 1 per group
Description: Students will work on their BALANCE while challenged to not be pulled off center by their friends while performing kicks.
Teaching SKILLZ: NEUROBICS
When the student does their kicks, they can name two of their favorite colors, superheroes, dinosaurs, or another age-appropriate category. This will connect the left and right hemispheres of their brain, and keep the students engaged in the activity.
Brain SKILLZ: VISUAL PROCESSING
The students must be able to see when their turn is, and do it correctly and quickly so they do not break the chain or lose balance. This works on their ability to make sense of what they see and participate in visual activities, as they must watch the chain, and when the person next to them goes, then they can go.
Step 1
Divide your students into lines.
Step 2 – Setting Up the Drill:
  • For each line have on instructor holding a clapper pad for front kicks
  • Give the first student in each line a ball
Step 3 – Explain the Rules:
  • When the instructor says go you will chamber your front kick
  • Then bounce the ball on one side of your chamber and catch it again.
  • After you catch it, kick the pad 1 time without putting your foot down.
  • Repeat this bouncing on the other side of your chamber and follow up with a kick.
  • Your goal is to get 5 bounces without putting your foot down.
Step 4 – Takeaways:
  • Make sure your balance leg is strong
  • If you start to lose your BALANCE, bend your knee.
  • Don’t let your chamber drop too far
Step 5
  • Continue until each student has 2 turns.
